EPISODE 164 | THE MIX TAPE RADIO SHOW

As should be the custom, let’s start things off by pushing the ‘play’ button on the digital Mixcloud player embedded below and see if your ears like what they’re hearing too (it’s free to click/listen):

And as we let this mixtape episode play on, I’ll just add that, once, while I was in search of a blahg’n routine more likely to get a fresh HI54 digital mixtape out the door EVERY week (back in the unsustainable old days of my “music blogging” path), I started combining my digital mixtape-making with my HI54 digital mix CD updating, which resulted in a “SHUFFLE UP’D EIGHT” extension of my old “THE MIX TAPE RADIO SHOW” idea, which helped that mixtape-making project extend its existence from sometime around 2010 to sometime around 2021 (with a total of 200 episodes made by the end of the run… and this is the one hundred & sixty-fourth of ‘em).

MTR - EPISODE 164
Episode 164 was created while I shuffled around in the HI54 Mix CD playlist ‘MOUNTOWN LIFE’ — which was a Spotify playlist I used to keep stocked & freshly updated with 95 tracks/artists that capture some of the vibes that bounce around the air when, like myself, you find yourself kicking about in a mountain town (or “MounTown” for easier hashtagging purposes).
So either press play on the embedded Mixcloud player at the top if you haven’t already OR jump over to Mixcloud to listen there (they also have an app for easier phone listening, if you fancy that) —AND THEN— please make sure you remember to have a browse through the listenable/clickable track listing compiled below, as the odds are pretty good that there’ll be an album/artist (or 2) that you’ll want to spend more time with as you listen on.

As I alluded to above, the making of this digital mixtape was originally connected to a Spotify playlist that I used to keep updated on an ongoing basis, HOWEVER, I not only stopped using Spotify back at the start of 2024, but I also stopped using any/all of the corporate music streamers that currently exist (as I don’t find any of them are working towards a future that doesn’t just continue to pile money at the top for a few, always off the backs of those who actually do the work/creating). As I believe the kids don’t call it, I’ve been working at “de-streaming” myself.

Admittedly, I do still use Spotify for podcasts, mostly out of familiarity, so I do not judge anyone who still uses their service (and if you do, you might as well go listen to the Spotify playlist of mine that this MTR tracklisting was originally pulled from).
However, there are more positive artist-minded sites/services that one could point to instead of Spotify & The Like, which is why I always used to keep a Buy Music Club playlist for every track that I would add to my MOUN.TOWN/FM mix cd playlists that were also available to buy directly from the artists/labels on Bandcamp, sooooo… here is my MOUNTOWN LIFE playlist on BMC that you can use to extend your current headphone explorations (as each track is connected to the artists/labels Bandcamp page).

And speaking of extending listening vibes, if you’d ever like to extend the ‘soundtrack-by-mixtape’ vibes further, I hi54lofi-ly recommend you go check out and bookmark MOUN.TOWN/RADIO (which’ll play one HI54 mix tape after another, ALL DANG DAY, once you press play on either SIDE A or SIDE B).
ALSO also: HI54LOFI was accepted into the Mixcloud Select program a little while ago, which means you can now support the making of these mix tapes & the artists included on them with a monthly subscription — if you’d be interested in something like that (or nobody would be mad at you if you’d prefer to make a one-time “thanks for the stuff” donation of your choice to HI54LOFI over here instead, or even if you just told someone else that they might like what they’d find over on the ol’ HI54.BLOG… that stuff helps too!).
And, final finally… if you hear something you like in this latest episode (or just in general out on the internets today), make sure to check out the people making the stuff you like out further and show them a little bit of love / support / appreciation (in whatever ways you can) — because everybody wins if we all start sharing some more metaphorical coffees/beers/cheers with the people making the things that make things a little bit better (and maybe start giving a little less to the people out there trying to keep things shitty). Every little bit counts.
