EPISODE 144 | THE MIX TAPE RADIO SHOW

EPISODE 144 | THE MIX TAPE RADIO SHOW

For the 3rd week in a row, the latest Mix Tape Radio episode has been inspired by the vital Black Lives Matter movement happening in America right now (and starting sparks around the world), a movement which is about so much more than just fighting back against the horrific systemic racism/fascism that sometimes gets captured on camera, and, despite a lot of social media returning to posting less and less about the fight for justice & equality, it’s a fight that is still very much going on (and here’s some ways to help/get involved).

Now, I’m not naive enough to think that what I do on my little mix tape series has much effect on the collective headphone consciousness, but it feels like posting/thinking/sharing about anything else right now just helps remove fuel away from a fire that is important to keep burning strong. And since I listen to music & put together mixes/playlists to help process what’s going on in my headspace, I’ve been listening to a lot more Black voices/stories than my folky/americana white dude tendencies tend to reach for, and I figured the least I could do with my little platform is make sure my weekly mix tapes are flavoured with music/messages that don’t help distract us from the ongoing work of demanding/making long overdue and historical changes.

If you find yourself enjoying any of the above, there are some pretty decent odds that following HI54LOFI out on the internets would not be the worst use of one of your internet clicks today (I tend to share things like the above on the regular-ish… so maybe we operate on similar wavelengths?)…

…and if you’re not sure about ways that you can help / get involved with the Black Lives Matter movement, wherever you are in the world and whatever your current situation/capabilities are, I’ve found this collection of links/resources to be a helpful one spot stop for finding ways to be more involved/informed. But, also, make sure to put in some effort on your own to diversify your social feeds & educate yourself if you really want to prevent yourself from slipping back into the apathy/ignorance/complacency that got us here in the first place. And don’t forget to go directly support artists + a great cause by buying some music on Bandcamp on June 19th.

Finally, if you’d like to listen to all the HI54 ‘BLM-Inspired’ mix tapes back-to-back-to-back, you can do that right here:
