HIGHLY RECOMMENDED W/ SPORTS DAY RECORDS

* This Q&A is being re-broadcast from August 2016, but don't worry: top notch recommendations have a long shelf life.

#1 - WHAT IS THE ONE ALBUM (OR EP OR SONG) THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE THE VERY NEXT MUSICAL THING THAT EVERYONE PRESSES PLAY ON THE NEXT TIME THEY FIND THEMSELVES THINKING “WHAT SHOULD I LISTEN TO NOW”?

Kiid by Mal Devisa, perhaps in particular the penultimate track 'Forget That I'.

The whole album is an incredible release that is so effervescent and wild but at the same time skilful. The simplicity of the instrumentals allows her personality to rise out of the songs. It's impossible to generalize Mal Devisa, she is just that unique and exciting.

'Forget That I' is one of the more tranquil moments of the album, a breath-taking ballad that will leave you speechless as she finally croons "I love it that way...".

#2 - WHAT IS THE ONE MOVIE OR TV SHOW THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE NEXT IN EVERYBODY’S NETFLIX QUEUE (OK, DOESN’T HAVE TO BE NETFLIX, WE’RE ALL INTERNET ADULTS HERE AND KNOW HOW TO FIND ANYTHING ONLINE, ONE WAY OR ANOTHER)?

I recently watched 'The Price of Gold', which is an ESPN documentary about two Olympic ice skaters from the early 1990s called Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan. I highly recommend it.

It's a great piece about crime, sport and the desire to succeed but also how society and the media can affect your representation. The Olympics are coming up also, so it seems very topical too!

#3 - I (AND BY “I” I MEAN “THE PERSON THAT IS READING THIS”) AM GOING TO THE BOOK STORE (OK, PROBABLY AMAZON) TO FIND THE VERY NEXT BOOK THAT I WILL BE PUTTING SOME EXTREMELY VALUABLE ‘ME-TIME' ASIDE FOR. WHICH BOOK WOULD YOU GET, IF YOU WERE ME (AND, I SUPPOSE, YOU HADN’T ALREADY READ WHAT YOU’RE ABOUT TO SUGGEST)?

Whenever I'm trying to read I always need short stories to get me started. It's almost like a warm up. So definitely pick up a copy of Raymond Carver's marvellous collections 'Will You Please be quiet, Please' and 'What We Talk About When We Talk About Love'.

They're both so well written, stirring and evocative. You'll feel somewhere between excited and abused as you read them.

#4 - WHAT IS THE ONE WEBSITE (OR JUST ANY OLD INTERNET THING: APP, GIF, SERVICE, WHATEVER) THAT YOU WOULD GET REALLY DOWN IN THE DUMPS ABOUT IF IT WERE TO SUDDENLY GO AWAY?

PORTALS. It may be music related (sorry if it wasn't meant to be) but it's just a great website that is totally at a different pace to other sites. You can go there and get lost.

It settles on an artist, a playlist or person in the music industry and presents them in a really beautiful way. There's some great photography on there, inspiring interviews and a wide variety of sounds. I try to follow as many music writers as possible but in regards to total site curation, then this space feels the most freeing.

#5 - AND FINALLY… PLEASE GIVE ONE COMPLETELY UNAIDED RECOMMENDATION THAT YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD START DOING / USING / WATCHING / EATING / THINKING / QUITING / ETC-ING TO MAKE THEIR LIVES A LITTLE BIT MORE BETTER AND/OR BEARABLE.

Swim. I'm in Austin at the moment, living here in a very hot climate. Swimming is something you need to do to cool down and enjoy the sun. Whether it's just paddling, dipping, diving or doing some laps; you should 100% get out there.

Take a second to listen to how the world sounds under water or on the surface. It'll wake you up, preparing you for the rest of your day.

OK folks, there you have it. Things that Sports Day Records think you should consider incorporating into your day/life. Before you go jump in the nearest body of water, go follow SDR on Twitter and like on Facebook and go grab their compilation on Bandcamp. Y'know, so you got some tunes for the pool/lake/sea/whatever you're about to go jump in.
