* Providing the A's to the 5 HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Q's today is Panther Hollow — a singer-songer from New York whose recent lovely single ‘Mars’ is waiting over on Bandcamp for those of you who missed it dropping over the holidays (and you can catch Mars in the HI54 digital jukebox ‘420 ≠ ALL DAY’).

#1 - WHAT IS THE ONE ALBUM (OR EP OR SONG) THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE THE VERY NEXT MUSICAL THING THAT EVERYONE PRESSES PLAY ON THE NEXT TIME THEY FIND THEMSELVES THINKING “WHAT SHOULD I LISTEN TO NOW”?

Hypnic Jerks by Spirit of the Beehive.

I started listening to them Fall 2018 and really fell hard for their sound. Hyping Jerks is a little spooky and unyielding and audacious. It’s a record that rewards repeat listens. It’s full of secrets, and I keep on going back to find more.

#2 - WHAT IS THE ONE MOVIE OR TV SHOW THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE NEXT IN EVERYBODY’S NETFLIX QUEUE (OK, DOESN’T HAVE TO BE NETFLIX, WE’RE ALL INTERNET ADULTS HERE AND KNOW HOW TO FIND ANYTHING ONLINE, ONE WAY OR ANOTHER)?

I’m a little late to the game, but I just started watching Adventure Time cover to cover last year and it is so fun and beautiful. It’s also full of secrets.

Adventure Time is one of those shows that I feel like everyone has a cursory knowledge of, but it’s worth a deep dive. Most of the time it’s extremely positive and pleasant, and then sometimes it’s just unbelievably beautiful.

As far as movies go, I really enjoyed Knives Out by Rian Johnson. Really clever and funny and well done.

#3. I (AND BY “I” I MEAN “THE PERSON THAT IS READING THIS”) AM GOING TO THE LOCAL BOOK STORE (OK, MAYBE THE LOCAL LIBRARY FIRST) TO FIND THE VERY NEXT BOOK THAT I WILL BE PUTTING SOME EXTREMELY VALUABLE ‘ME-TIME' ASIDE FOR. WHICH BOOK WOULD YOU GET, IF YOU WERE ME (AND, I SUPPOSE, YOU HADN’T ALREADY READ WHAT YOU’RE ABOUT TO SUGGEST)?

So I actually found myself in this situation and I had no idea what to get and I bought Latinx by Ed Morales. I had a gift card and I wanted to get a book that would teach me something.

My parents are both Colombian immigrants, and I wanted to learn a little bit more about this group that we get lumped into that doesn’t even really have a codified name — some of us prefer Latino, some Hispanic, some prefer not even to identify with those titles. I learned about the history of the Latinx (from Spain to Africa to the indigenous population in the new world), how as a group of people who come from many different countries and comprise a large spectrum of race and language we have a unique perspective on and can potentially upset race politics in the US, how we could potentially organize in the US and around the world, and so many other things. It was REALLY hard to read as someone that doesn’t read much theory, but it was also a really rewarding challenge.

#4 - WHAT IS THE ONE WEBSITE (OR JUST ANY OLD INTERNET THING: APP, GIF, SERVICE, WHATEVER) THAT YOU WOULD GET REALLY DOWN IN THE DUMPS ABOUT IF IT WERE TO SUDDENLY GO AWAY?

Ok ok ok. N game. I discovered this game in middle school. I don’t play it very often anymore but every once in a while when I’m bored I’ll dust it off and it still holds up. In fact, while writing this I just did some research and found that N is still kicking and it has received critical acclaim! Huzzah!

By the same token, I think Limbo and Inside by Playdead are both so so beautiful. Those games really moved me. Lots of secrets there too.

#5 - AND FINALLY… PLEASE GIVE ONE COMPLETELY UNAIDED RECOMMENDATION THAT YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD START DOING / USING / WATCHING / EATING / THINKING / QUITING / ETC-ING TO MAKE THEIR LIVES A LITTLE BIT MORE BETTER AND/OR BEARABLE.

A couple of things that have made my life better: cooking/eating with friends — playing board games (with friends; check out 7 wonders and Betrayal at House on the Hill) — going to dance till the wee hours of the morning to music that I don't know.

Go dancing to music that you don’t know.

OK folks, there you have it. Things that Panther Hollow thinks you should consider incorporating into your day/life. Before you log off and go start dancing to songs you don’t know, make sure to follow Panther Hollow on the Facebook / Instagram / Twitter and then also give ‘Mars’ a listen below…

…and if you like what you’re hearing, go do some further panther-hollow-flavoured audio exploring over on the Bandcamp / Spotify.
