HIGHLY RECOMMENDED W/ FOOTHILLS
* Providing the A's to the 5 HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Q's today is Foothills— a Brooklyn-via-Atlanta ambient project from Drew Hart whose lovely new self-titled album provides a great soundtrack for those times when you just need to lie down on the floor for a bit (and you can catch the track ‘Dark Green’ on the HI54 Mix CD ‘HIGH FIVE FOR… SPRING’).
#1 - WHAT IS THE ONE ALBUM (OR EP OR SONG) THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE THE VERY NEXT MUSICAL THING THAT EVERYONE PRESSES PLAY ON THE NEXT TIME THEY FIND THEMSELVES THINKING “WHAT SHOULD I LISTEN TO NOW”?
I think David Berman was a lyrical genius. He has an album called American Water with his band Silver Jews that I’ve been listening to on repeat. I feel like the track “Honk if You’re Lonely Tonight” feels particularly relevant right now.
#2 - WHAT IS THE ONE MOVIE OR TV SHOW THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE NEXT IN EVERYBODY’S NETFLIX QUEUE (OK, DOESN’T HAVE TO BE NETFLIX, WE’RE ALL INTERNET ADULTS HERE AND KNOW HOW TO FIND ANYTHING ONLINE, ONE WAY OR ANOTHER)?
The Sopranos! No question about it.
#3. I (AND BY “I” I MEAN “THE PERSON THAT IS READING THIS”) AM GOING TO THE LOCAL BOOK STORE (OK, MAYBE THE LOCAL LIBRARY FIRST) TO FIND THE VERY NEXT BOOK THAT I WILL BE PUTTING SOME EXTREMELY VALUABLE ‘ME-TIME' ASIDE FOR. WHICH BOOK WOULD YOU GET, IF YOU WERE ME (AND, I SUPPOSE, YOU HADN’T ALREADY READ WHAT YOU’RE ABOUT TO SUGGEST)?
I really liked Left Hand of Darkness. I think its a sci-fi classic. But it’s not super sci-fi-y. Brings up some really interesting questions about gender among other things. But I’m probably the wrong person to ask.
Every book report I ever wrote in school was on The Hatchet which I never even read.
#4 - WHAT IS THE ONE WEBSITE (OR JUST ANY OLD INTERNET THING: APP, GIF, SERVICE, WHATEVER) THAT YOU WOULD GET REALLY DOWN IN THE DUMPS ABOUT IF IT WERE TO SUDDENLY GO AWAY?
Maybe this is a hot take but I would be very sad if music streaming went away. Artists definitely need to make more money from streaming but from a listening stand point its amazing.
Its easy to take for granted, but its really incredible to be able to listen to pretty much any recording ever made whenever/wherever you want.
#5 - AND FINALLY… PLEASE GIVE ONE COMPLETELY UNAIDED RECOMMENDATION THAT YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD START DOING / USING / WATCHING / EATING / THINKING / QUITTING / ETC-ING TO MAKE THEIR LIVES A LITTLE BIT MORE BETTER AND/OR BEARABLE.
I started jogging. We’ll see how long it lasts but so far it feels great. Like it feels like I’m turning my whole life around every time I go for a run.
Sometimes I get a little stoned before hand which makes it extra fun. So ya I would recommend jogging!
