HIGHLY RECOMMENDED W/ CARVER BARONDA
#1 - WHAT IS THE ONE ALBUM (OR EP OR SONG) THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE THE VERY NEXT MUSICAL THING THAT EVERYONE PRESSES PLAY ON THE NEXT TIME THEY FIND THEMSELVES THINKING “WHAT SHOULD I LISTEN TO NOW”?
Max and the Martians’ EP “Curtains”! It’s four upbeat, danceable, fun rocks songs. It’s great. Max and the Martians are a New Orleans band who play live around town quite a lot, and it’s apparent that being able to facilitate dancing and merriment was in mind when making this music.
The cover art is also pleasingly weird
#2 - WHAT IS THE ONE MOVIE OR TV SHOW THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE NEXT IN EVERYBODY’S NETFLIX QUEUE (OK, DOESN’T HAVE TO BE NETFLIX, WE’RE ALL INTERNET ADULTS HERE AND KNOW HOW TO FIND ANYTHING ONLINE, ONE WAY OR ANOTHER)?
I think this one came out last summer, but if you haven’t seen “Nanette” by Hannah Gadsby, I’d recommend that. It’s categorized on Netflix as a stand-up comedy special, but that’s just to bamboozle you. It’s actually an extremely well-written and executed one-woman show. There’s some jokes in it, but there’s also a lot of sobering social commentary from a perspective that for me, was refreshing to hear. Especially on such a mainstream outlet.
If you’re just feeling like watching a feature film as opposed to a live performance though, “I Don’t Feel At Home in This World Anymore” is really silly and good and it’s on Netflix too.
#3. I (AND BY “I” I MEAN “THE PERSON THAT IS READING THIS”) AM GOING TO THE BOOK STORE (OK, PROBABLY AMAZON) TO FIND THE VERY NEXT BOOK THAT I WILL BE PUTTING SOME EXTREMELY VALUABLE ‘ME-TIME' ASIDE FOR. WHICH BOOK WOULD YOU GET, IF YOU WERE ME (AND, I SUPPOSE, YOU HADN’T ALREADY READ WHAT YOU’RE ABOUT TO SUGGEST)?
If I was looking for non-fiction, I’d get “The Cloudspotter’s Guide” by Gavin Pretor-Pinney. It’s everything you’d want to know about clouds written in an accessible, funny, and quite frankly, delightful manner.
If I was looking for fiction, I’d get “A Land More Kind Than Home” by Wiley Cash. I actually found a copy of this book in a stack of abandoned boxes in a barn in North Carolina, where the story is set (and the author is from). It was a real gem of a find, a southern gothic told from the perspective of three different characters in a story that centers around small town Appalachia, religious fanaticism, and a mysterious death.
#4 - WHAT IS THE ONE WEBSITE (OR JUST ANY OLD INTERNET THING: APP, GIF, SERVICE, WHATEVER) THAT YOU WOULD GET REALLY DOWN IN THE DUMPS ABOUT IF IT WERE TO SUDDENLY GO AWAY?
Simpsons World, it has every episode of The Simpsons! It’s only available in the States so when I am in Canada I actually do experience it suddenly going away and I feel the void for sure.
#5 - AND FINALLY… PLEASE GIVE ONE COMPLETELY UNAIDED RECOMMENDATION THAT YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD START DOING / USING / WATCHING / EATING / THINKING / QUITING / ETC-ING TO MAKE THEIR LIVES A LITTLE BIT MORE BETTER AND/OR BEARABLE.
Go swimming as often as possible. Or, if you’re one of those weirdos who hates getting wet, ride bikes.
OK folks, there you have it. Things that Carver Baronda thinks you should consider incorporating into your day/life. Before you log off and go ride your bike to the nearest swimming hole, make sure to follow Carver Baronda on the Facebook / Instagram and then give ‘Full Moon Lullaby’ a listen below…
