WHERE'S THE BEEF DIP? | MOUNTOWN JOURNAL

Written by Sarah Stupar | September 2020

A city’s Facebook group can be both a terrible place and a wonderful place, depending on how many posts you scroll past and how deep into the comments section you dig, but for smaller towns these groups can also be an incredibly valuable resource to share information — especially for those considering a move or newly arrived in town.

And it is from that lens that I bring you a story about the good kind of ‘Facebook beef’ that can be found online, as a brand new Cranbrook resident with a craving for beef dip recently queried the CRANBROOK, BC group for tips on the best beef dip in town. Reader I was shocked, shocked I say, at the absolute multitude of beef dip options that exist for us residents along highway 95, eh.  In the words of the original poster “I didn’t realize that this side of the Kootenays is beef dip central”.

My first instinct at seeing the list of recommendations was to start a YouTube Channel dedicated to trying and rating each beef dip recommended. So I set on down to the Heidout, phone camera at the ready, tripod in hand, to start my new career as a food blogger, only to instantly realize that in no world am I comfortable making videos of myself eating, and most restaurants lack the proper lighting for such an endeavour anyways. And I absolutely do not want to be that person who brings their own lighting to a restaurant for YouTube purposes. I did very much enjoy my Heidout beef dip though, but you’ll just have to take my written word for it.

So, instead of becoming a local beef dip vlogger, I have compiled a list of local beef dip providers recommended in that community Facebook group, so now you may go forth and host your own beef dip review show, whether just in your mind, or in real life out on the internets! Perhaps a beef dip club is in order? We could make little punch cards to be punched with each new beef dip tried? And we could make shirts that say “Where’s the beef?” that point to our bellies? Or maybe I should just pass on the curated list of locally recommended local beef dip options and we can discuss all the juicy details of where to take this beefy venture next, later:

Places to get a locally recommended beef dip in Cranbrook: The Heidout, Cranbrook Golf Club, Mr. Mikes, Heritage Inn, The Cottage, Northwest Grill, and Shananigans.

Places to get a locally recommended beef dip in Kimberley & Marysville: Marysville Pub, The Sullivan Pub, and Trickle Creek Golf Course Clubhouse.

Places to get a locally recommended beef dip in the surrounding area: Jaffray Pub and Sunshine Grill, Wasa Country Pub & Grill, and Bull River Inn.

Ok, that’s the list — now get out there & get dipping!

And, as always, please remember:
