HIGHLY RECOMMENDED W/ THE JINS

* Providing the A's to the 5 HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Q's today is The Jins — a trio of rockers & rollers out of Vancouver whose EP Death Wish drops in May, but you can sample a couple tracks / pre-order ver on Bandcamp (and you can catch lead-off track ‘She Said’ hanging out in the HI54 mix cd ‘DIVE BAR’). And now… recommendations x3! [Photo by Carly Dame]

#1 - WHAT IS THE ONE ALBUM (OR EP OR SONG) THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE THE VERY NEXT MUSICAL THING THAT EVERYONE PRESSES PLAY ON THE NEXT TIME THEY FIND THEMSELVES THINKING “WHAT SHOULD I LISTEN TO NOW”?

Ben- I've been really into this electronic artist GAS lately. My brothers girlfriend asked my to pick up a vinyl of his from the record store for her and I listened to it and I felt like I had a total re-evaluation of what can constitute as music. It's basically the most minimalist music can get before just becoming white noise, its a very other-worldly listening experience.

Hudson – The Most. An amazing mathy band from my home state of Connecticut who had a killer first record with "At Once", and who are working on their follow up now.

Jamie - I am really digging the song “I Forgot to Take My Meds Today” by Prince Daddy & The Hyena. They are amazing live performers!

#2 - WHAT IS THE ONE MOVIE OR TV SHOW THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE NEXT IN EVERYBODY’S NETFLIX QUEUE (OK, DOESN’T HAVE TO BE NETFLIX, WE’RE ALL INTERNET ADULTS HERE AND KNOW HOW TO FIND ANYTHING ONLINE, ONE WAY OR ANOTHER)?

Ben- I think everyone should watch Carl Sagan's original Cosmos doc series. Some of the info is a little out dated, but Carl’s message and love for humanity is so concise and powerful it is definitely worth watching.

Hudson – Ping Pong the Animation. This is a series by an amazing director Masaaki Yuasa who is able to transform the world of seemingly boring and irrelevant Japanese high school ping pong, and turn it into something engaging with some incredible visuals.

Jamie – Titanic by James Cameron is an awesome movie. Extremely well made and quite the tear jerker.

#3. I (AND BY “I” I MEAN “THE PERSON THAT IS READING THIS”) AM GOING TO THE BOOK STORE (OK, PROBABLY AMAZON) TO FIND THE VERY NEXT BOOK THAT I WILL BE PUTTING SOME EXTREMELY VALUABLE ‘ME-TIME' ASIDE FOR. WHICH BOOK WOULD YOU GET, IF YOU WERE ME (AND, I SUPPOSE, YOU HADN’T ALREADY READ WHAT YOU’RE ABOUT TO SUGGEST)?

Ben – My favourite book of all time is the classic science fiction “Dune”. To me, that book has everything. It's like a Shakespeare drama in space that touches on so many different topics like environmentalism, spiritualism, government and sociological issues. It's an absolute classic and I highly recommend it.

Hudson – Raymond Carver’s “Cathedral”. This book was recommended to be by my dad a long time ago and I go back to it often. They are great, but bleak stories that really amaze you on how much emotion and meaning he is able to express through such a minimalist writing style.

Jamie –Scar Tissue” - The autobiography of Anthony Kiedis from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I would recommend it to anyone who loves music.

#4 - WHAT IS THE ONE WEBSITE (OR JUST ANY OLD INTERNET THING: APP, GIF, SERVICE, WHATEVER) THAT YOU WOULD GET REALLY DOWN IN THE DUMPS ABOUT IF IT WERE TO SUDDENLY GO AWAY?

Ben – I would probably end up being happier if any of my social media apps disappeared. I am way too attached to my phone all of the time, and sometimes it's just the greatest thing to hide it from yourself for a day and just enjoy your surroundings.

Hudson - Hollywood Handbook. This is a goofy comedy podcast I’ve listened to for years, it has made my Tuesday mornings consistently enjoyable.

Jamie – I feel that Facebook messenger has become such a vital part of communication, if it went away, i’d be fucked.

#5 - AND FINALLY… PLEASE GIVE ONE COMPLETELY UNAIDED RECOMMENDATION THAT YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD START DOING / USING / WATCHING / EATING / THINKING / QUITING / ETC-ING TO MAKE THEIR LIVES A LITTLE BIT MORE BETTER AND/OR BEARABLE.

Ben – Just don't base your self worth on what haters have to say about you. Don't worry about people whose only goal is to be better than you, and put you down. Always move towards your goals and believe in what you’re doing.

Hudson – When you dump water out of a bottle you can do a little swirl with your hand and then it makes a little whirlpool inside and the water comes out faster.

Jamie - I would say to stop trying so hard, and just focus on small goals that will eventually lead you to where you want to be. You can’t change the past.

OK folks, there you have it. Things that The Jins thinks you should consider incorporating into your day/life. Before you log off and go stop trying so hard and just believe in yourself that you can swirl your water to dump it faster , make sure to follow The Jins on the Facebook / Instagram / Twitter and then also give ‘She Said’ a listen below…
