HIGHLY RECOMMENDED W/ MIKE PACE AND THE CHILD ACTORS
#1 - WHAT IS THE ONE ALBUM (OR EP OR SONG) THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE THE VERY NEXT MUSICAL THING THAT EVERYONE PRESSES PLAY ON THE NEXT TIME THEY FIND THEMSELVES THINKING “WHAT SHOULD I LISTEN TO NOW”?
Lately I've been obsessed with "She's a Mystery to Me" from Roy Orbison's final album Mystery Girl, released in 1988 right before the singer died at the age of 52.
The track, written by Bono and The Edge towards the tail end of the Joshua Tree tour, captures Orbison's inimitable angelic pipes atop an understated but still stately, slightly ambient but still melodious backing track. Absolutely heavenly.
#2 - WHAT IS THE ONE MOVIE OR TV SHOW THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE NEXT IN EVERYBODY’S NETFLIX QUEUE (OK, DOESN’T HAVE TO BE NETFLIX, WE’RE ALL INTERNET ADULTS HERE AND KNOW HOW TO FIND ANYTHING ONLINE, ONE WAY OR ANOTHER)?
In the wake of the disastrous 2017 remake of GOING IN STYLE, in which a trio of senior citizens embarrass themselves, I implore folks to check out the 1979 original starring George Burns, Art Carney and Lee Strasberg, directed by a young Martin Brest (who went on to make other classics like BEVERLY HILLS COP and MIDNIGHT RUN).
Alternately a hilarious, thrilling and poignant on aging and loneliness, it also captures New York City during what many consider a fallow period but I find totally fascinating.
#3. I (AND BY “I” I MEAN “THE PERSON THAT IS READING THIS”) AM GOING TO THE BOOK STORE (OK, PROBABLY AMAZON) TO FIND THE VERY NEXT BOOK THAT I WILL BE PUTTING SOME EXTREMELY VALUABLE ‘ME-TIME' ASIDE FOR. WHICH BOOK WOULD YOU GET, IF YOU WERE ME (AND, I SUPPOSE, YOU HADN’T ALREADY READ WHAT YOU’RE ABOUT TO SUGGEST)?
Call me a "Dick Head," but I'm knee-deep in my first reading of Moby-Dick and I'm enthralled. The book had been sitting on my night stand for some time and I'd been intimidated to delve in but once I started -- and realized how weird, funny, descriptive and readable it is -- I'm having a hard time putting it down.
I love reading about a world I'm unfamiliar with and getting to know all of its nooks and crannies, and the cost of blubber. I'm not finished yet so no spoilers!
#4 - WHAT IS THE ONE WEBSITE (OR JUST ANY OLD INTERNET THING: APP, GIF, SERVICE, WHATEVER) THAT YOU WOULD GET REALLY DOWN IN THE DUMPS ABOUT IF IT WERE TO SUDDENLY GO AWAY?
My go-to, check-multiple-times-a-day site these days is New York Magazine's Daily Intelligencer.
Informative, succinct, pithy and often infuriating recaps of news as it breaks (with a healthy dose of stoopid pop culture stuff as well).
#5 - AND FINALLY… PLEASE GIVE ONE COMPLETELY UNAIDED RECOMMENDATION THAT YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD START DOING / USING / WATCHING / EATING / THINKING / QUITING / ETC-ING TO MAKE THEIR LIVES A LITTLE BIT MORE BETTER AND/OR BEARABLE.
Treat yourself to a foot massage/foot reflexology once a month. You walk on those things every day - give 'em some love every once in a while!
OK folks, there you have it. Things that Mike Pace & The Child Actors thinks you should consider incorporating into your day/life. Before you log off and go find a place where you can get them feet rubbed, make sure to follow Mike on Facebook / Instagram / Twitter and swing by Bandcamp for some tunes to walk around to on those freshly pampered feet.
