HIGHLY RECOMMENDED W/ JACKSON REED

* Providing the A's to the 5 HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Q's today is Jackson Reed – a singer-songer from northern Ontario (yeah - just like that Neil Young song) who has a nice new album out called 'Dark Areas of Description' that you can listen/grab over on Bandcamp and some nice life tips that you can check out below.

#1 - WHAT IS THE ONE ALBUM (OR EP OR SONG) THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE THE VERY NEXT MUSICAL THING THAT EVERYONE PRESSES PLAY ON THE NEXT TIME THEY FIND THEMSELVES THINKING “WHAT SHOULD I LISTEN TO NOW”?

Another Show by Whoop Szo is quite beautiful.

They are a very eclectic band, with musical styles ranging from folk, to psych, to metal and classical. I am really excited to see them. I hope they play this song. I hope you enjoy it.

#2 - WHAT IS THE ONE MOVIE OR TV SHOW THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE NEXT IN EVERYBODY’S NETFLIX QUEUE (OK, DOESN’T HAVE TO BE NETFLIX, WE’RE ALL INTERNET ADULTS HERE AND KNOW HOW TO FIND ANYTHING ONLINE, ONE WAY OR ANOTHER)?

Juno. It's pretty clever and fun to watch. The dialogue, set design, outfits, music, plot line. It's all just so enjoyable to me and it's one of my fave movies of all time.

I think Kimya Dawson is a great songwriter and I'm happy I discovered her through the film.

#3. I (AND BY “I” I MEAN “THE PERSON THAT IS READING THIS”) AM GOING TO THE BOOK STORE (OK, PROBABLY AMAZON) TO FIND THE VERY NEXT BOOK THAT I WILL BE PUTTING SOME EXTREMELY VALUABLE ‘ME-TIME' ASIDE FOR. WHICH BOOK WOULD YOU GET, IF YOU WERE ME (AND, I SUPPOSE, YOU HADN’T ALREADY READ WHAT YOU’RE ABOUT TO SUGGEST)?

Jack Kerouac's Dharma Bums. It's a classic tale about Buddhism, poetry, nature, solitude, creativity, alcohol, and nomadic adventure. The 1940-1960 beatnik scene conjured up so much cool stuff to dig into re: fashion, music, poetry, literature.

Kerouac also has On The Road. Similar to Dharma Bums, it's more about one mans journey and less about travelling as a group. Also, it makes me think a story I heard about the time that Dylan left his hometown in Minnesota to train hop to New York for folk music.

#4 - WHAT IS THE ONE WEBSITE (OR JUST ANY OLD INTERNET THING: APP, GIF, SERVICE, WHATEVER) THAT YOU WOULD GET REALLY DOWN IN THE DUMPS ABOUT IF IT WERE TO SUDDENLY GO AWAY?

Exclaim is always entertaining for me. YouTube videos on jazz guitar or music theory is great for learning. There is this dude, Rick Beato, that goes hard with the music theory knowledge. I would say if you find yourself with a computer and some free time, check out his essential skills for a professional musician video and go deep into the nerd zone.

It's so fascinating, the science/math behind the musics.

#5 - AND FINALLY… PLEASE GIVE ONE COMPLETELY UNAIDED RECOMMENDATION THAT YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD START DOING / USING / WATCHING / EATING / THINKING / QUITING / ETC-ING TO MAKE THEIR LIVES A LITTLE BIT MORE BETTER AND/OR BEARABLE.

British Columbia. Specifically Nelson and the Kootneys. I was just there to play and we stayed with Hannah from the music project Kern. It was actually so enjoyable. The mountains and farms. Pretty magical stuff.

I think I would actually move there if I didn't already have a plan to go to school and like had a life in Ontario. Also Vancouver was pretty rad too-shout out to Stylus Records for sitting and listening to us play. 🙏

OK folks, there you have it. Things that Jackson Reed thinks you should consider incorporating into your day/life. Before you log off to go map out how to get yourself over to British Columbia (as someone who lives in the East Kootenays myself, I can double confirm that BC recommendation), make sure to follow Jackson on the FacebookInstagram / Twitter and go swing by his Bandcamp and press play on some tunes.
