HIGHLY RECOMMENDED W/ AUDIO ANTIHERO
#1 - WHAT IS THE ONE ALBUM (OR EP OR SONG) THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE THE VERY NEXT MUSICAL THING THAT EVERYONE PRESSES PLAY ON THE NEXT TIME THEY FIND THEMSELVES THINKING “WHAT SHOULD I LISTEN TO NOW”?
Benjamin Shaw sent me them to listen to and after kind of ignoring him, it’s now my favourite thing. “Jet Fuel Can’t Melt Steel Beams” and “West Side Story” are great songs about the horrible horrible horrible people who seem to be running this world, either through wealth and general authority or through their crummy votes.
CAMP COPE are a super special Rock band. They open up a lot of feelings that I worry I’m too old to be having, but those feelings are still here, on a good day. Hey, by the way, everybody stop saying guitar music is dead when you’ve just stopped paying attention. That shit is daft.
#2 - WHAT IS THE ONE MOVIE OR TV SHOW THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE NEXT IN EVERYBODY’S NETFLIX QUEUE (OK, DOESN’T HAVE TO BE NETFLIX, WE’RE ALL INTERNET ADULTS HERE AND KNOW HOW TO FIND ANYTHING ONLINE, ONE WAY OR ANOTHER)?
The Beyond by Lucio Fulci from 1981.
I spent a lot of time trying to understand The Beyond, along with the two other films in Fulci’s “Gates of Hell” trilogy (City of the Living Dead / The House by the Cemetery). That may have been wasted time however as I recently read that Fulci described them as “just a collection of images” and an attempt to present a nightmare on film.
And it certainly is a nightmare. Part haunted house film, part zombie film, part collage of weird shit. You kind of just have to submit to it and see how you do.
Some aspects of this film make no sense (WHY WON’T HE SHOOT THE ZOMBIES IN THE HEAD WHEN IT CLEARLY WORKED THE TIME HE DID DO IT), some parts are hard to defend (the door sign that reads “Do Not Entry” is pretty great, as is the hospital that is just called “Hospital”) but there’s still so much really really good stuff in the world that The Beyond creates. For better or worse, there haven’t been too many filmmakers like Fulci.
There’s a really lovely looking book about Lucio Fulci coming out soon but it costs $70 and I don’t sell anywhere near enough records to buy that.
#3 - I (AND BY “I” I MEAN “THE PERSON THAT IS READING THIS”) AM GOING TO THE BOOK STORE (OK, PROBABLY AMAZON) TO FIND THE VERY NEXT BOOK THAT I WILL BE PUTTING SOME EXTREMELY VALUABLE ‘ME-TIME' ASIDE FOR. WHICH BOOK WOULD YOU GET, IF YOU WERE ME (AND, I SUPPOSE, YOU HADN’T ALREADY READ WHAT YOU’RE ABOUT TO SUGGEST)?
Mr Shivers by Robert Jackson Bennett. A random library find. If Joe R. Lansdale ever felt like committing to one or two genres for an entire novel then he might write this. It’s an American road trip Horror novel set during the great depression. It follows a group of men who are unconnected beyond their pursuit of a scarred individual who has taken something irreplaceable from each of them.
These men endure a variety of terrible happenings, during one of the harshest periods in American history. That it begins to follow a similar path as Clive Barker’s Midnight Meat Train is in no way a negative for me. It’ll also take care of any romantic notions you might have about riding the rails.
I love horror and I’m quite sure that much of what I read is glorified teen fiction. My intellectual limitations are legion. But my smart wife liked it, if that counts for anything.
#4 - WHAT IS THE ONE WEBSITE (OR JUST ANY OLD INTERNET THING: APP, GIF, SERVICE, WHATEVER) THAT YOU WOULD GET REALLY DOWN IN THE DUMPS ABOUT IF IT WERE TO SUDDENLY GO AWAY?
I spend way too much of my life on www.cagematch.net. It’s a German website that hosts a ton of wrestling results, stats, etc. It’s basically IMDB for wrestling. You can see who was wrestling who where when and for which championship. I like to suck the fun out of everything so I probably spend more time on there going “ooh wrestling happened!!!” than I do watching wrestling. Plus, I think it’s nice that people are archiving all of this information somewhere.
#5 - AND FINALLY… PLEASE GIVE ONE COMPLETELY UNAIDED RECOMMENDATION THAT YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD START DOING / USING / WATCHING / EATING / THINKING / QUITING / ETC-ING TO MAKE THEIR LIVES A LITTLE BIT MORE BETTER AND/OR BEARABLE.
Single fucking Payer fucking Healthcare. Universal Healthcare. Medicare-for-all. Whatever you call it, I’d really like us to have it. It doesn’t seem very likely in a battle of Clinton vs Trump, however.
I miss the NHS so much and I have literally no idea what America’s beef is.
OK folks, there you have it. Things that Audio Antihero think you should consider incorporating into your day/life. Before you go spend the rest of your day reading up on who wrastled who, go follow AAH on twitter and like 'em on Facebook and then go spend some time on their Bandcamp page because it is loaded with gems.
