HIGHLY RECOMMENDED W/ TYLER THOLL FROM MAPLE & BEECH
#1 - WHAT IS THE ONE ALBUM (OR EP OR SONG) THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE THE VERY NEXT MUSICAL THING THAT EVERYONE PRESSES PLAY ON THE NEXT TIME THEY FIND THEMSELVES THINKING “WHAT SHOULD I LISTEN TO NOW”?
I'm going to cheat and recommend two artists. One of my favorite bands is Har-di-Har, the wife-husband duo of Julie and Andrew Thoreen based right here in the Twin Cities. The two make incredible music together, but they each released solo projects this year that have absolutely blown me away.
Listen to "First To Leave" by Real Judy…
and "I Know What It Takes" by Andrew Thoreen.
Both songs take a sophisticated approach to pop by combining super catchy melodies with artful arrangements and experimentation. They make smart music that's also fun to listen to - a rare and satisfying combination.
#2 - WHAT IS THE ONE MOVIE OR TV SHOW THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE NEXT IN EVERYBODY’S NETFLIX QUEUE (OK, DOESN’T HAVE TO BE NETFLIX, WE’RE ALL INTERNET ADULTS HERE AND KNOW HOW TO FIND ANYTHING ONLINE, ONE WAY OR ANOTHER)?
The best movie I've seen in recent memory is Jordan Peele's ‘Us’. I'm not usually big into horror films but this one transcends the genre in so many ways. I love everything about it.
Honorable mention: the new season of Queer Eye. Episode 5, "On Golden Kenny," had me in tears.
#3. I (AND BY “I” I MEAN “THE PERSON THAT IS READING THIS”) AM GOING TO THE BOOK STORE (OK, PROBABLY AMAZON) TO FIND THE VERY NEXT BOOK THAT I WILL BE PUTTING SOME EXTREMELY VALUABLE ‘ME-TIME' ASIDE FOR. WHICH BOOK WOULD YOU GET, IF YOU WERE ME (AND, I SUPPOSE, YOU HADN’T ALREADY READ WHAT YOU’RE ABOUT TO SUGGEST)?
My book recommendation is for all the new parents out there. I'm a dad to two youngsters. We've been reading my favorite story when I was a kid, The Little Engine That Could.
A super obvious choice for a children's book, for sure, but it's been fun to rediscover this story as an adult. Its message of altruism feels especially pertinent in 2019, and it features a lot of characters, so there's ample room to show off any voice acting skills that you may possess.
#4 - WHAT IS THE ONE WEBSITE (OR JUST ANY OLD INTERNET THING: APP, GIF, SERVICE, WHATEVER) THAT YOU WOULD GET REALLY DOWN IN THE DUMPS ABOUT IF IT WERE TO SUDDENLY GO AWAY?
My favorite comedian, Andy Kindler, and J. Elvis Weinstein (writer on Freaks and Geeks and MST3K, among many others) have a podcast called Thought Spiral.
It's a weekly conversation between two friends that usually includes a Foster Brooks impression, discussion about mental health, and a third thing. I'd be really down in the dumps if it were to suddenly go away.
#5 - AND FINALLY… PLEASE GIVE ONE COMPLETELY UNAIDED RECOMMENDATION THAT YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD START DOING / USING / WATCHING / EATING / THINKING / QUITING / ETC-ING TO MAKE THEIR LIVES A LITTLE BIT MORE BETTER AND/OR BEARABLE.
If you find yourself driving through central Minnesota, searching for the best food in the world, stop at Bravo Burritos.
My go-to is the Vegetarian Burrito with guacamole, but if I'm feeling spicy you might see me with a Vegetarian Smothered. It's made my life better and will make your life better too.
OK folks, there you have it. Things that Tyler Tholl from Maple & Beech thinks you should consider incorporating into your day/life. Before you log off and go make a trip to Minnesota for a burrito, make sure to follow Maple & Beech on the Facebook / Instagram and then also give ‘Like We Mean It’ a listen below…
