* Providing the A's to the 5 HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Q's today is Sam Allen from Run Coyote — a rocking n’ rolling outfit from Ontario, whose latest single Night Rider was recently featured in the HI54 Mix CD ‘OPEN ROAD’ and you can grab a copy for your own headphones over on Bandcamp.

#1 - WHAT IS THE ONE ALBUM (OR EP OR SONG) THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE THE VERY NEXT MUSICAL THING THAT EVERYONE PRESSES PLAY ON THE NEXT TIME THEY FIND THEMSELVES THINKING “WHAT SHOULD I LISTEN TO NOW”?

I can’t stop listening to Tom Waits. He’s an incredible performer. His voice gets a lot of attention, for good reason, but he’s also a very talented songwriter – he creates whole worlds. Right now I’m really into Bone Machine.

It’s raw and stripped back: you feel every scratch, strum, and vocal strain and are sucked right in. For a start, check out “Earth Died Screaming,” “Dirt in the Ground,” and “Goin’ Out West.”

#2 - WHAT IS THE ONE MOVIE OR TV SHOW THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE NEXT IN EVERYBODY’S NETFLIX QUEUE (OK, DOESN’T HAVE TO BE NETFLIX, WE’RE ALL INTERNET ADULTS HERE AND KNOW HOW TO FIND ANYTHING ONLINE, ONE WAY OR ANOTHER)?

I’ve been really into film noir lately. My favourite is The Third Man.

Everything is highly stylized. The cinematography is like another character in the film. The filmmakers play a lot with light and dark, long and tall shadows. Every shot is at an odd angle; off kilter. The music features only a weird stringed instrument. It’s post-World War II Vienna. Joseph Cotton, Alida Valli, and Orson Welles are all great.

#3. I (AND BY “I” I MEAN “THE PERSON THAT IS READING THIS”) AM GOING TO THE BOOK STORE (OK, PROBABLY AMAZON) TO FIND THE VERY NEXT BOOK THAT I WILL BE PUTTING SOME EXTREMELY VALUABLE ‘ME-TIME' ASIDE FOR. WHICH BOOK WOULD YOU GET, IF YOU WERE ME (AND, I SUPPOSE, YOU HADN’T ALREADY READ WHAT YOU’RE ABOUT TO SUGGEST)?

Along with film noir, I’ve been reading a lot of hardboiled fiction – the novels that inspired the films. My current favourite is The Maltese Falcon.

Dashiell Hammett creates very vivid images that shine in your eyes as you read the pages, while the San Francisco fog rolls past. He mixes fear and darkness with mystery and excitement. What is the Maltese Falcon!?

#4 - WHAT IS THE ONE WEBSITE (OR JUST ANY OLD INTERNET THING: APP, GIF, SERVICE, WHATEVER) THAT YOU WOULD GET REALLY DOWN IN THE DUMPS ABOUT IF IT WERE TO SUDDENLY GO AWAY?

The Dominos Pizza Tracker.

#5 - AND FINALLY… PLEASE GIVE ONE COMPLETELY UNAIDED RECOMMENDATION THAT YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD START DOING / USING / WATCHING / EATING / THINKING / QUITING / ETC-ING TO MAKE THEIR LIVES A LITTLE BIT MORE BETTER AND/OR BEARABLE.

Voting to save the environment/Earth/world/our future.

OK folks, there you have it. Things that Sam Allen from Run Coyote thinks you should consider incorporating into your day/life. Before you log off and go make sure you are registered and informed for any elections coming up in your area (nudge nudge fellow British Columbians who haven’t sent back their Proportional Representation envelopes yet + an extra big nudge nudge to any Americans reading this), make sure to follow Run Coyote on whatever variation of Facebook / Instagram / Twitter that you use, and then pop over to their Bandcamp page to do some headphone exploring.
