For as long as I can remember, my most reliable source for what is really going on in the world has come from 'comedy news' (ok… my memory does go back further than my late teens, but still, it's been for a long time). Jon Stewart. Stephen Colbert. And now John Oliver's excellent HBO show (which is all the more excellent because of the healthy amount of easy access uploads to Youtube they put up). In fact, I would say these are the only places I get my news from (which would probably explain why I seem to be a lot more aware about what is happening in America than in England or Canada).
I guess this must be because the actually news is a depressingly laughable sad joke. For example…
I know the Daily Star is not considered an 'actual newspaper' —they do look like a newspaper and are sold amongst England's actual and high number of even more 'not actual, but pretend that they are' newspapers— but just the other day in the grocery store I saw them using a screen shot from a Miley Cyrus music video and then pretending to run an exclusive story about an actual drug overdose.
Anyways, watch the John Oliver video above and check out more of his videos if you're not already a convert to his new show. And could we please get some good England & Canadian 'comedy news' shows going so I can be more informed about what's going on in the place I am currently living and the one I will probably be living in again?
Or, alternatively, could newspapers and news programs just not be so embarrassingly awful?
