I went to the cinema tonight with the intention of seeing 'The Wolf On Wall Street'. Unfortunately, it had sold out 2 minutes before I arrived at the ticket office. So, rather than going home bitter about not pre-ordering the tickets, I bought two tickets for American Hustle instead. I hadn't really heard or seen too much about it, I only knew that it had received a bunch of Oscar nominations and had Jennifer Lawrence in it. That was about all I knew going in.
Well, I enjoyed it. There was a bit of a Goodfellas / Casino / Boogie Nights vibe to it, and those are all movies I really like. But the main thing about American Hustle that has stuck with me was Christian Bale's performance. Again, I went in not really knowing anything more than Jennifer Lawrence was in it. Perhaps if I had known that Christian Bale was the lead actor, his performance wouldn't have been as impressive. Don't get me wrong, it would still have been impressive, as he is pretty amazing in it… but I honestly did not know it was Christian Bale until the end credits.
I knew I recognized 'somebody', but I couldn't put my finger on it. His character looked a lot like Kenny Rogers in the 70's, but I was clever enough to know it wasn't actually Kenny Rogers (that would be impossible… although the thought did cross my mind). I eventually decided to just tell myself that Christian Bale's character was actually being played by Josh Brolin. I wasn't 100% confident that this was correct, as it didn't quite look exactly like Josh Brolin, but I needed to just spend my time focusing on the movie and not trying to figure out who was playing Irving (besides, at the time, thinking it was Josh Brolin seemed like a pretty believable option).
Well, the credits rolled and Christian Bale's name appeared instead of Josh Brolin's. Which made me immediately multiply my appreciation of the performance (and also feel a bit stupid, as my girlfriend said that she totally recognized him in the first 5 minutes).
So… nice acting Christian Bale.
Also… bad observation skills Jeremy.
